Background of the Study
Biotechnology has emerged as a transformative tool in agriculture, offering innovative solutions to increase crop yields, enhance pest resistance, and improve nutritional quality. In Nigeria, the adoption of biotechnology—such as genetically modified crops and biofertilizers—has gained momentum as a strategy to address the challenges of low productivity and climate variability. Between 2023 and 2025, government agencies and private investors have promoted biotechnology through research grants, pilot programs, and extension services (Oluwaseun, 2023). The theoretical framework supporting biotechnology adoption is based on its potential to revolutionize traditional farming methods by introducing advanced genetic and molecular techniques that optimize plant performance. Empirical studies have demonstrated that biotechnology can lead to significant improvements in crop yields and resilience, thereby contributing to food security and economic growth (Adebisi, 2024).
Despite its potential, the uptake of biotechnology in Nigeria faces barriers such as regulatory uncertainties, public skepticism, and high initial costs. These challenges have slowed widespread adoption and limited the sector’s ability to fully benefit from technological advancements. This study examines the impact of biotechnology adoption on Nigeria’s agricultural sector, analyzing its effects on productivity, cost efficiency, and market competitiveness. It further explores the challenges hindering biotechnology diffusion and proposes measures to accelerate adoption and maximize its benefits for the agricultural economy.
Statement of the Problem
Although biotechnology offers promising solutions to boost agricultural productivity, its adoption in Nigeria remains limited. The core problem is that regulatory challenges, public apprehension, and financial barriers have prevented biotechnology from being fully integrated into mainstream farming practices (Ibrahim, 2024). Farmers, particularly smallholders, often lack the resources and technical support needed to implement these advanced technologies. Furthermore, inconsistencies in government policies and insufficient extension services contribute to low awareness and trust in biotechnological innovations. As a result, potential yield improvements and cost reductions remain largely unrealized, limiting the overall competitiveness of the agricultural sector. This study aims to investigate the factors inhibiting the adoption of biotechnology and to evaluate its economic impact on productivity and market performance, with the goal of recommending strategies to overcome these barriers and promote widespread adoption (Nwankwo, 2023).
